So... Not true hibernation, but rather cold boot DRAM image?

Isn't that precisely what hibernation is? From cold boot to restored RAM contents?

There was also Intel Rapid Start Technology but that seemed to have gone nowhere

Fingers crossed. Restoring from hibernation is pretty slow on Linux.
