In older 386, 486 code, the better developers did keep count of memory access cycles to hand-optimize assembler routines. But then the world moved to memory modules with varying access times where the access times suddenly were not fixed anymore. No fun to supply three different hand-optimized variants to be selected after having tried to auto-detect the RAS/CAS effects for the specific system.
