Michael, it would be interesting to see a benchmark of Clear vs Arch with the unofficial Clear Linux kernel (available from AUR or a 3rd party repo) as well. Been using that for some time now and Arch is buttery fast and smooth now.

The reason for the improved feeling is down to the higher kernel ticks of Clear's kernel vs. Arch's: 1000 Hz against 300 Hz.

Now, if you were to use Canonical's "lowlatency" kernel (1000 Hz + PREEMPT) and combine that with some basic tweaks [performance governor & kyber IO-scheduler & swappiness=1 & nowatchdog & irqbalance & triple-buffering & some more I can't remember right now] your mind probably wouldn't even be able to handle all the awesomness!

Arch was, but Plasma and Vivaldi (on every DE) weren't. Sorry, should've clarified that.

7z bench is only in ram. It doesn't create files.

The OS shouldn't even be a difference then, perhaps 7z is performing memory allocation inside the hot path (since that differs between OS:es) or it's the change in compilers as danger suggested.
