At the end of the day, sanctions against chinese tech will weaken US tech giants like Google and Microsoft, by forcing the chinese to develop and push their own platforms worldwide and to compete more directly against them.

A win for customers worldwide (less dependency to US tech, more competition) and a loss for the US as a commercial power.

Maybe in the long run, but in the short run this isn't going to be very good for Huawei or their customers. A wholesale replacement of all the IP from U.S companies along with non-U.S companies using IP from the land of guns, tobacco and cardiovascular disease with anything domestically produced is extremely difficult. This was clearly shown by how ZTE themselves concluded that they were basically finished as a company if this happened when they were the verge of becoming subject to the same treatment not too long ago.

The longer term kick in the teeth for Huawei is that even ARM has had to begin cutting ties with them due to their IP using American-made tech, which I suspect is referring to their synthesis tools they use as they are very much a VHDL shop (as shown by the IP cores they sell always being delivered in this format).

However what really worries me here is what's going to happen next. Neither Trump nor the Chinese government are the type to back down when things start spiraling out of their control and both think that the best way to stop it is to put their fist down really hard. With China we saw this at Tiananmen Square and Trump when he sent the national guard to the southern border.

I have a feeling that the Chinese response, which they seem to have been mulling over for the last few days, is going to be something fairly drastic. Maybe seizing U.S owned assets in the country or banning Chinese companies from working with American companies, which obviously is going to be a major issue with China being the tech manufacturing hub of the world. After this the U.S will obviously respond with a similar escalation and they'll just continue taking turns at escalating their trade war.

Maybe Huawei has enough 5G patents to make it impossible to build 5G devices without a license from Huawei.

I think Trump really underestimated Chinese need for the US market and just cost US companies billions. I'm betting this is the final straw to shift the global dynamic to China based power. There will probably be a slew of new chip makers in China.

On another note, I don't fully understand why China never embraced open-source everything from the beginning. Why even use (legal or pirated) closed-source software?

Isn't it a bit too late for Huawei to start correcting major missing elements in their Linux support?

They should have been clever enough to cultivate a proper Plan-B and have decent Linux mainline support and maybe a custom Linux distro too that can be deployed at a moment's notice if something happens to their Windows licenses (as it just did).

Instead, they are caught flat-footed and now feverishly considering options (which now range from bad to catastrophic).

Let's hope this a a nice warning sign for every OEM and they start building out proper Linux support as they should have for a long time.

This is childish bullshit. What the fuck is an U.S. owned asset. We aren't in 1900 anymore, doing that would piss off investors from all over the world.

Chinese's trade war has always been remarkably smart stuff, they won't suddenly go full retard mode just because the US is going the same way.

They subsidize heavily the industries they want to push for export (be it steel or Huawei), so they are able to sell better products at unrealistic prices and screw competition for years.
They go out and buy off competition overseas in weaker countries where possible (usually in African countries).
They DO NOT allow to sell foreign products to chinese internal market. If you want to sell to chinese you MUST produce it in China.
They DO NOT allow foreign companies to come and set up shop in China alone. They MUST do a joint-venture with a chinese company, or create a chinese company to be their puppet. A very common outcome (completely unexpectedly) is that the chinese company does learn and/or steal the know-how and then proceed on its own, for the Greater Chinese Good.

Trump's actions aren't even remotely comparable to this. Chinese oligarchs are fucking laughing at his little tantrum.
