Crowdfunded but not freeware? Vulkan only is the right way to go.

since the introduction of Vulkan which has the same feature set and performance advantages this seemed a much more logical rendering API to use as it doesn't force our users to upgrade to Windows 10

Awesome indeed! I wonder when they will have their first Alpha test out with the new API?

Well they need rewrite their engine to get the right calls without screwing up their current work, then get their rendering pipeline ready again without screwing up what currently works. So a Windows alpha of the Vulkan version maybe 6 months if it's high priority probably closer to a year, if you want a Linux alpha you'll be waiting an good long while past that due to the heaven knows how much windows specific stuff they'd have to rewrite or replace. A project of this size should really have planned from the start to be crossplatform

Ha, egosoft has been going this route for about a year now! Vote egosoft now;p
Seriously though, good to hear and hope it goes well for'em, us, and the windows users.

The $39 million figure is probably from the initial kickstarter. Since then most of the rest has been raised through selling ships, etc. on their website.
