Phoronix: PlayStation 4 Running Linux Can Now Use AMDGPU-PRO With Vulkan

The work to run Linux on the PlayStation 4 continues to advance and previously we reported on those behind it managing to exploit the Radeon graphics found on the AMD APU powering the PS4. The latest milestone is they now have Vulkan running on the PS4...

Quite apart from this being really cool that they could get this to work at all, it could also be quite interesting to see performance differences. The Doom 2016 vulkan backend runs at parity to windows when done over wine I recall so it could be interesting to see what the performance vs the PS4 version ends up being and what level of settings you need to get parity.

It's the PS4 using the AMDGPU PRO driver

From marcan's comments, the PS4 Pro is not supported yet, because the GPU is different and they could not get any driver to work so far.

Michael it's Dolphin to be CPU limited, not Vulkan.

Didn't Sony lock Linux in the PS4?
If so, then i suppose this is works using some hacked firmware.
              Which makes even more impressive.

              Good work.

You are probably thinking PS3 that originally had OtherOS feature but that was removed in a software update.

Anyway, yes this requires exploiting PS4 to run Linux, because it's not supported.

Yes, they had to do write "PS4 malware" to root the PS4 to get console/root access first, then do a kexec to start linux kernel while shutting down the BSD kernel. The last article on phoronix about PS4 has a link to the slideshow telling the full story.

(Psst! Might be worth running a Vulkan game--or two--too. )
                    why bother steamos?
He already demoed Steam on Gentoo (iirc) on the PS4.
