...also, does anyone know what kind of potential market share Vulkan has? I.e. how much of the GPUs that are in active use (by gamers) can actually run Vulkan?

Wouldn't it make more sense for Valve to work with NVidia and AMD directly, instead of with a group that needs to do a bunch of reverse engineering before they can make anything work?
