Phoronix: OpenRW: An Open-Source, Linux-Friendly Reimplementation Of GTA III

There is OpenMW as a re-implementation of Morrowind, OpenRA as a re-implementation of Command and Conquer, and many other open-source game projects out there seeking to be free engine re-implementation of popular classic games. The latest of these projects is OpenRW, a re-implementation of Grand Theft Auto III...

This project requires a legitimate copy of the original PC game data in order to run. Without this data it will not be possible to use openrw.
    ... this is sad

What? Do you expect them to remake all of the in-game assets, which would then effectively come down to an entirely new game and take years more work? Or do you expect them to ignore copyrights and effectively pirate the game for everyone? Even the engines idTech engine releases and other open-source engines were always this way in requiring the assets from the game itself.

        Preferred the original GTA.

Interesting, personally more interested in OpenMW and OpenRA, especially if OpenRA gets into Red Alert 2 territory.

Morrowind and Red Alert 2 are to this day two of my all time favorite games.

So isn't easier to just get whole GTA3 from a single ("original") source then?

Interesting project but I suspect that it will have limited appeal as GTA III works in Wine and the game is now 15 years old with very dated graphics.

Doom derivatives are still played to this day and have hundred of servers. If they make modding easier and add multiplayer later down the road, it becomes more interesting than the original game. Not to mention the hundred of small improvements it makes possible.

I still want someone to reimplement GTA2 though.

Not necessarily. If you still have a Windows XP PC then yes, but if you want to play it outside of Windows XP, or take advantage of other improvements made to the engine then you will want to use this reimplementation. Not to mention that recent Windows versions have some problems with some older games, so if we want these games to continue being playable on modern hardware this is the way to ensure that.

It's not the only such project, a couple years back someone was using Irrlicht to display GTA3 maps.
