Not necesseraly - they'll own the code to do with that they like, but if they've sold the rights to distribute the Linux versions of the games based on the engine they won't be able to

He covered it recently; and I expect that a large number of Phoronix readers were already familiar with it. For everyone else, there is also Google, and DuckDuckGo for people who won't Google.
Serious engine (1) is the engine which powered/powers Serious Sam; one of the hottest game releases of 2001. Croteam, the developers of the engine, released the source code to it recently. Ryan C. "Icculus" Gordon was contracted to port this game to Mac OS X and Linux back while it was still selling well. Ryan wanted to release his Linux and OS X ports of the game, and it seems now that he got permission and also did the work of updating his patches to work with the version they opened up.

Remember that others may know exactly what he is talking about, while you may not know that this is not the "first major release" of the engine.
