There *is* a guarantee that they'll work because the games will use >>Steam's libraries<< and NOT the system's libraries (for what really matters). These Steam libraries are isolated from the system, they are located in a separate folder under "/home/etc/.steam/": that's what the games will use (for what matters) and that's why they'll work under every modern distro ( that are equal or newer than Debian Wheezy - Ubuntu 12.04) out there, because the games are compiled to run on those isolated Steam libraries.
