Pretty sure SteamOS doesn't use a window manager for it default session, so would be hard to benchmark one.

Yes. But the decision has not yet been made as to whether October/November's hardware releases will ship with Alchemist (SYSV) or Brewmaster (Systemd)

When you look at the Q&A they mention that upgrade is not implemented in Alchemist. I assume they'll ship the Brewmaster then since the goal of steam machines is to promote evolution and modularity (in hardware and software)

It has also some comments from Pierre-Loup (Plagman) of Valve and Daniel Stone in the comments section.

What are the major differences between Debian 8.1 and Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 apart from the kernel?

Debian 8 is Debian's stable release with long term support period, like Ubuntu LTSs... while Ubuntu 15.04 is SSSRE - super shortest supported release ever

Ok, I DID NOT expected that, and am very pleasantly surprised. That explains silence from SteamOS team for some time. Hopefully they will roll out Steam Machines with 2.0, as Jessie has lot of nice fixes and certainly recommended to upgrade (reading changes of course first).
