Yeah, boycotting does neither the developer or the gamers any good. Pirating over boycotting is the way to go since at least that produces very radical figures in the developer's analytics.
But if you want to support the developer because you enjoy the game, then yeah definately buy it (but only ever install or run the torrented version). How else can they get the money to produce future titles? I buy a hard copy of OpenBSD every release even though it is open-source because I want to support them.
An interesting question though, is the "rental" version on Steam even the same price as a potential standalone boxed copy? Or is it cheaper due to being subsidised by Valve for users to consume from their rental machine? Then ask yourself why?
For the record, I do *not* condone piracy because you are too cheap to buy the damn thing. I am often accused of this though since this accusation is the only weapon the evil DRM "system" has against people like me.
