From a powerful Linux gaming machine in a awkward place to a crappy laptop hooked up to a giant TV in your living room perhaps? A big part of what Valve is trying to push is PC gaming in your living room.

I've tried it Windows to Linux and it worked fine, though it was choppy at 1080p. It even coped well with the 'first time setup' thing, and a pre-launch game launcher (to set the resolution and whatnot).

Because I'm a Linux user. (Duh.) I have a good gaming PC, but I have less powerful hardware in the living room, that can just about play HL1. So this whole streaming idea seemed like an interesting thing to try out.

I admit it's not the most useful thing, but it never feels good to be treated as a second-class citizen.

that' s really odd, I definitely remember doing this (I was in the beta). I streamed games from my r600 desktop to my haswell GT2 laptop. It worked fine.

Which bit doesnt work?

I streamed from my Gaming Linux machine to a low powered Linux Laptop just fine.. TF2 if i recall.

No problems.

Well, that's confusing. I actually tried it with steam beta yesterday and it wouldn't let me do it because it insisted that it only supports windows.

That is correct, they removed this feature for Linux. IIRC due to poor(er) performance on Linux. They then rewrote the streaming back end but didn't release Linux support. IMHO they probably were focusing on the Windows back end performing well (which I've heard it does) and taking their time with the Linux one. I have a GeForce GT 430 and it wasn't using hardware acceleration (it ran very poorly on my core 2, 2.4GHz which is to be expected)... AFAIK hardware accelerated encoding should be possible... I know what I'm looking up today.
