If we can port our codebase over easily, we will probably support Linux.
Porting between SDK versions is not considered easy.

i dont think their was actually any major update from SDK 2007 to 2013

The games now build and run clients on Windows, OSX, and Linux. Dedicated servers are supported on Windows and Linux.
New steam pipe supported by the sample mods. Existing mods can change their gameinfo.txt to match the new format and gain Steam Pipe support.

i doubt their will be any major update to the source engine until source engine 2 eventually arrives

The 2009 SDK brought Mac support and it apparently took GarrysMod a log time to port from 2007 to 2009. Some one should do a diff between 2007 and 2013

Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer - Not installed
            but

yes its all a bit of a disappointment really

we can now play source mods (SDK base) but not create them (SDK)

we can all forget about it till source engine 2 i guess

"No, hammer is only available on windows and we have no plans at this time to change that.

It is a MFC app, which is a windows only UI tech, so a port would be difficult. Future engines have been designed with cross platform support in the toolchain from the start."

Yeah, the original SDK, 2006 and 2007 are not Linux compatible. They never saw Mac comparability either.
