And as for why you should get used to it - well, because Steam is an easy way to distribute on linux it's going to be the way everything is done going forward. If you want to keep being disappointed at every new game on linux for the next few years, you're welcome to do so, but you aren't going to be very happy.
Ehmmm Steam supports offline mode that is nothing new or particular to the X3 games. It is still DRM since it only allows you to play on one machine at a time and requires you to have Steam running. So merely being able to play offline doesn't mean that a game on Steam is DRM free.

You missed smitty3268's point. For X3:R, you can just copy the files (from ~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/X3\ -\ Reunion) and run the game from wherever without steam. You only need to suffer through steam's evil once (every update...); the game itself is DRM-free.

That is a completely different story, the only thing he based his claim of it being DRM free on was the ability to play it offline.

No, you don't. As i said, you can play completely offline, without Steam at all. You just need to download the no-steam patch from Egosoft's website. Steam is just a way to buy, download, and install the game, if you don't want any of the other bonus's that come from it.

The NoSteam executable for X3: Albion Prelude Version allows you to play the game without having to run the Steam client. It can be downloaded from the Downloads page, as long as you have registered either X3: Terran Conflict or X3: Albion Prelude in your forum profile. To use it:

Download the NoSteam executable from the link provided above

Copy the executable to your X3TC Steam directory (by default C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\x3 terran conflict)

Start the game by doubleclicking on this executable

Note: We only recommend using this if you have particular difficulties running Steam. Solutions to most common problems with Steam are covered in our Steam FAQ section.

If you are using the NoSteam executable you won't be able to:

Patch your game – Patches are only provided through Steam

          Play in "Dead-is-Dead" mode

          Get Steam achievements

Use any other Steam online function

With the NoSteam executable it is technically possible to completely remove Steam from your system and still play the game. However, you should back up your Steam games before uninstalling Steam, otherwise all your Steam games will be uninstalled!

Unfortunately you never know whether some Steam release has DRM or not (i.e. requiring you to run the Steam client in order to run the game). Therefore I simply avoid it outright, since I don't support those who endorse DRM. The only hope for DRM free Linux gaming can be GOG if they'll add such option (feel free to vote for it): http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/add...sions_of_games

Why can't they sell it without Steam then?? I.e. they use DRMed platform and offer DRM free patch. It's really weird, when they can sell it right away through a DRM free one!

The overhead of some other channel may cost more than they save by not having Steam take a cut?

They can use Humble Store to sell it. Little overhead and no DRM junk.

Redundant / repetitive Steam / DRM arguments aside - a huge (!) congratulation to Egosoft for going the extra mile and porting all their games to Linux.
Hopefully, X:R will be available on Linux the same day the Windows version is released.
