  • Android 3D games and GPL

I'm a dev for the Hammer of Thyrion project, and was interested to
see our game is being sold as an android app.
    http://www.androlib.com/android.appl...d-h2-Dqjz.aspx
It seems unclear if this is the Hexen 2 demo, or full game (which is probably illegal).

The catcha is - i've had no luck getting the source code (the game is GPL-ed),
and the dev seems to be quite unhelpful.

    Any ideas ?

    I know it's off-topic, but:
.aspx? WTF is that a Microsoft Windows Server running a database for Android apps? That just seems wrong.

Hm... I strongly think the person's not caring about whether they violate Copyright rights or not, if the list of the "titles" they've "produced" are any indication. I strongly doubt that "Spear of Destiny", the original Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, and others that he's charging $0.99-4.99 for are licensed to him for that purpose. You may have to retain an attorney like the busybox guys did and shut him down- just don't expect to get much of anything out of him on it.

I'm familiar with that dev (at least his "apps".) He's notorious for making cheap hacks of games (Duke 3D, Heretic and the like were Doom-based hacks and not the real games) and he charges for these crappy "ports" and passes them off as the real thing all while making a profit.

If I'm not mistaken there should be a way to report an app within the Android Market. You could try that if you can.

I submitted an objection in the Android Market as "GPL violation". I hope it helps.

I persued it myself recently, and if you visit the web page, it has
This application seems to be removed from the Android Market
across the top in small letters, so i guess it's been fixed.

GPL abuse may be a widespread problem with android apps
