I have not been able to verify the content of the files yet, but will look into it as soon as I get home from work.
I downloaded and decompressed all the files. There's a native Steam executable, but I didn't manage to get it running yet.

    Code:
    yjwong@yjwong-laptop:~/Documents/steam$ file linux32/steam
linux32/steam: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.19, not stripped
    Calling steam.sh:

    Code:
    yjwong@yjwong-laptop:~/Documents/steam$ ./steam.sh

Well OK maybe it is, but that doesn't really mean it will be released to the public anytime soon (Hopefully I'm wrong with that).

Don't get me wrong, these launchers are interesting! But after the last time Phoronix wrote about this a few years ago (don't remember exactly when) and everyone was excited, than nothing happened and years later we're still waiting, I don't trust any rumors around Steam for Linux anymore.

At least, rumor has it that also a native Linux client for World of Warcraft existed in the beta and we still got nothing. As another one stated, the Linux support of the Steam client could also simply be for internal testing to fix bugs or whatnot. Yeah, I know I'm to pessimistic, but I got disappointed quite a few times the last years regarding the Steam client.

I think ML said there were linux .so files in the Left4Dead game disk. Valve seems to be a more nimble software company than Blizzard. I agree that it will be coming out soon. Even if its not released to the public you can download this on their website, thats more than I can say for any phantom WOW client.

Well, while the graphics probably wouldn't work, having an app that could be used for downloading and updating the dedicated servers would be handy. And those have no particular requirements outside raw CPU speed and a good network connection. Both quite possible with older kernels.

You don't even need good network connection since steam is more or less just IE in disguise (and paired with a bunch of broken social-network features :P )

Well, with Steam moving over to WebKit that won't be the case anymore. It'll be Safari in disguise instead!

Steam has already switched to WebKit, at least for all the beta users.

You shouldn't be running a server on older kernels... unless you want to get hacked even the patched versions probably have quite a few holes as they become less used.'

Shouldn't it also be possible to run the server on netbsd with linux emulation?
