I imagine Wine has to get proper Wayland support and then Proton (since it's a fork, has to be tested too). So far Wine Wayland is functional but not useful for Proton just yet, it's like the last piece to get Steam Wayland. I also believe that 32-bit gets dropped as a consequence if Wayland is involved (don't quote me on that).

talking about the client. No reason to wait for wine for that.

The updated bundled Chromium is probably a good first step.

Sad to hear that they're dropping Windows 7!
That was the best Windows Microsoft ever released!
Fuck Microsoft and Valve for this!
Valve could've waited a bit longer before doing it, like Mozilla.
As for the embedded Chromium, I bet it's not the Ungoogled one, so fuck Valve again!
Has anyone checked if Steam connects to Google servers too?

Your comment isn't snarky enough, 5 years isn't that long.

In the totality of hardware that people use to game with Steam, anything with AV1 encoding capability probably counts as 'high end' with Valve.

Can't say as I understand if there is some unstated reference to something about Steam, but that doesn't really make sense when you can get an AV1 encoder on low end PCs.

Yes you can, but only new ones. AV1 encoding is a Lovelace/RDNA 3 feature, so you are talking about Phoenix laptops at worst, but from Nvidia only discrete graphics... a 4060 laptop edition which has to be around the 90th percentile for performance in the Steam Hardware survey. Unless Valve's information has always been wrong, there are a lot of people who simply don't upgrade their equipment often, or are satisfied playing what they can on Intel integrated graphics. A 4060 or RX 7600 are far from high end in their own lineups, but they are competing against ancient laptops and aging midrange cards among Steam users as a whole.

Except for the Phoenix integrated-only laptops (and I suppose the trash ARC A380), anything with an AV1 encoder should be able to play any game in the Steam catalogue, Cyberpunk, Alan Wake, Black Myth, whatever. I could see that being 'high end' to Valve.
