Phoronix: Valve Shows A Huge Drop In Linux Gamers For March, But The Numbers Are Questionable

Valve just published their Steam Survey results for March 2023 and these initial numbers show a 0.54% drop to the Linux gaming marketshare, putting the overall Linux gaming population at around 0.84% of the Steam customer base. However, once again these numbers appear skewed/inaccurate...

phoronix You should do some statistics magic to see what the results would be if the new numbers were adjusted to keep the proportion of users’ languages the same as previous reports. If there was an external systemic change (as speculated in the article) then such an adjustment might undo that.

With the Steam Deck still selling like crazy, it was a surprise to see such a big month-over-month drop
Everyone I know either gets it with Windows or just installs it later. Not sure why, but it just seems to be a trend. I think most people treat it more like a laptop than a gaming console, and most people lean towards Windows since they're used to using software best supported on it.

Linux is very healthy. But most people are people of habit, they want what they are used to. So they install Windows. Who cares? It is their loss. Remember, those people do not contribute in any way, shape, or form, into the Linux ecosystem, they do not write code, they do not donate. If they want to install windows on their machine, probably pirated, because X,Y game doesn't play properly with Proton, let them. It won't stop Valve from contributing to Linux. It won't make less game developers develop games for linux (most who are likely to offer native ports, are doing it already). The Linux desktop IS there, and it IS awesome. No matter how many use it.

All that is true but why are you writing it out almost as if you're trying to console yourself?
You almost type as if you're holding back tears.
            They're just tools bro.

              Why are they questionable?
Chinese is the most spoken (native) language in the world.
What's questionable is not seeing languages like Arabic(4), Hindi(5), Bangali(6) and Lahndi(10) in these surveys, because they are not European languages.

              Edit:
              What's funny is to see `Spanish - Spain 3.50%` and `Spanish - Latin America 0.23%`. Isn't that questionable?

Midwits. Unironically IQ bell curve meme. Tech illiterate use it as it is, midwits try to "fix" the broken os and use something they're familiar with, and tech-enjoyers are just happy with their linux-powered handheld machine.

That could be try, but most of redditors from /r/steamdeck seems to be sticking with the Linux gang

Yeah, you're doing it again, you're actively insulting and/or belittling a large demographic of people because they don't share your opinion.
Again, as correct as you may be, you're exhibiting yourself as paranoid.
