              $8M is really not a lot of money - it wouldn't get even a Y2K-era game to release, let alone a modern one - but it's a decent chunk of change that can keep an engine team running for quite a while.

              The problem is that you only really polish and expand engines BY having games use them, so what Godot needs now that its future is secure for a while is developers - of ANY standard - actually using the thing to work out the kinks and drive new development. If they're willing to contribute to wikis/docs/etc too that's a bonus, but that can be done by someone on staff. Hammering on the engine is what matters, and extending it in useful directions as time permits and demand is expressed.
