    > continues work-in-progress code on OpenGL 3.x rendering support

    Why 3.x instead of 4.6?

Because GLES 3 is the latest supported by browsers and phones.

The GL3 rendering support isn't yet usable but is an alternative to the Vulkan API usage and OpenGL ES.
The "OpenGL 3" renderer is actually OpenGL ES 3.0, so it's not an alternative to OpenGL ES

Godot does not intend to have a desktop-only OpenGL renderer, so that it can run on mobile devices and WebGL 2.0. This is also why it's OpenGL 3.3 Core Profile, and not anything newer.
