Phoronix: BattlEye Support In Good Shape With Steam Client Beta + Proton Experimental

Back in September it was announced that the BattlEye anti-cheat technology would support Proton with an emphasis on the forthcoming Steam Deck. Now as a nice present for Steam's 9th birthday on Linux, that BattlEye support is coming together...

Sadly I don't think many developers will ask for this to be enabled, same with EAC. I've asked quite a few and their basically, don't care, too much work, general statements. I think Steam Deck is not going to go quite as smoothly as everyone thought it would....

I don't know how much simpler it could possibly get for battle eye...the dev literally just has to call them and ask them to enable it for their game. no game updates required.

So they don't want to be part of the Steam Deck launch event, first I've heard of publishers not wanting free publicity.

Yeah I've mentioned that; ultimately many just don't care. Often claiming linux is a dead gaming platform, go away sort of statements... such is life of linux.

This is when *you* contacted them. Of course they don't give a shit about some random guy on linux.

But the hot new handheld, from the company with a monopoly on all of PC gaming? VALVe has some actual leverage to get publishers to look through their back catalog.

Not to mention, this is a perfect opportunity for valve to name-and-shame them. If VALVe starts plastering big red NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NEW TOY warnings all over thier stuff in the store page, it's going to make publishers uncomfortable.

              .
While true; but generally I'm talking about public discussion with other people where the developer drops in and gives their thoughts as to why they don't really care.

The only reason they have a sort of "monopoly" is that they do not use any "leverages" to force anybody to do anything. Morons from GOG.com tried, their anti-DRM agenda cost them their marketshare. So Valve will not force or "shame" anybody.

Well that is quite a bad comparison. Taking DRM away from game publishers is like prying water away from a person lost in a desert. A rather visible pointing out of deficiency that can be fixed by a phonecall is nothing like forcing them drop DRM...
