That's because +0.14 points for Linux are indeed a success, while +0.34 points for Windows, which floats around much higher percentages, is usual noise or normal fluctuation.
So, +0.14 is noise too. Eg. a few Windows users go to holiday so linux has big growth .
Windows 7 64 bit 5.48% +3.51% (an OS which is no longer supported)
English 37.96% -2.08%
Simplified Chinese 22.91% +5.41%
I'm looking forward to Valve enabling the hw survey for all its users because this monthly swings make understanding its stats impossible.
In other news NVIDIA and Intel have both increased their market shares despite AMD fans claiming that RDNA 2.0 and Zen 3 are the best GPU/CPU architectures ever :-)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 continues to be the most popular GPU ever.
Radeon RX 6800 and 6700 don't ever register in the survey (which means fewer than 0.01% of Steam users have them) while the combined share of Ampere RTX 3000 cards has continued to grow, there's an increase of 1.18% which is more than the entire number of RX 5700/5600 users.
Popularity != how good the arch is. Especially with GPUs, people will just buy whatever they can get at MSRP, or in my case, whatever is in the laptop they want. I picked up a Asus G14 2021 refresh a few months ago, AMD Zen3 CPU but Nvidia 3060 GPU. AMD is just finally getting into the high-end laptop GPU market with their "AMD Advantage" laptops, so they're at a marketshare disadvantage here for now. Though I will admit, 10nm Intel (which has now rolled out to high-end laptops, not just thin-and-lights) is surprisingly competitive, probably because the transistor density is similar to TSMC's 7nm. (Intel's desktop offerings are still firmly planted on 14nm++++++ for this gen, sadly.)
It actually kinda makes sense, people are interested in trying out Linux to see what things are like ahead of the launch.
Yeah however Valve is probably going top drop critical feature updates on day 1 of steam deck in peoples hands such as anticheat support and other store support (somehow). Atm none of that exists via steam so it will give people a bad taste no doubt. (not to mention I've seen people think Game Pass works under Linux... it does not, unless via cloud, lol)
If windows keep growing it will reach 100% market share in 10 months ;D.
Windows will shrink.
The TPM 2.0 requirement will make a lot of people jump ship to Macs and Linux. Many of these computers which are incapable of running Windows 11 will be very powerful and not that old. These users will not be ready to give them up. Sure, most will just take the beating that Microsoft is dishing out, but there's always that sizeable amount who get frustrated and never come back to Microsoft-land.
Bizarre how on a hardcore Linux news site, good news about Linux gaming brings out the most bitter windows fanboys to whine and criticize. Anyone rooting for windows to have a monopoly on gaming isn't thinking rationally and is letting childish brand loyalty warp their thoughts on the subject.
