Steam's Proton umbrella efforts are all open source, aren't they? The projects efforts can ne utilised without having Stram installed?

I personally capitulated on Steam and bought Valheim (oblivious to the massive sales numbers) and have been pleasantly surprised that it runs on Linux, on my 3200G. Bit of a crappy grindy game that doesnt really inspire any creative thinking (I do weird stuff anyway to relieve boredom) but still a promising game in early stages nonetheless.

Yes! You can use Proton without Steam. But you'd probably have to use something like the Proton-GE: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom . Reason: https://old.reddit.com/r/linux_gamin...steam/gdxz70m/

I've encountered only one BLOB from Valve, and that's libsteam_api.so. But I think this could be replaced with something like: https://gitlab.com/Mr_Goldberg/goldb.../-/tree/master But you don't have to replace it for Proton-GE to work without Steam, only if you don't like the fact that there is a small BLOB there for the Steam API.

P.S. Avoid Proton-GE versions 6.1-6.5, games simply wont start. I've compiled the master-branch and the issue seems to have been fixed in 6.6. So either use 6.0 (which should be good enough) or wait for 6.6.

Groovey, thanks for the update. I still need to get my Lutris collection (1000 titles from GoG alone...) in order before pushing into experimental Proton territory.
