Phoronix: Wine's Direct3D Code Will Now Default To OpenGL Core Contexts For NVIDIA GPUs Too

Earlier this year with Wine 3.9 its Direct3D code changed to default to OpenGL 4.4 core contexts rather than the legacy/compatibility context. NVIDIA GPUs ended up being left at the older value but now that has changed...

Does the core context perform better than the old one?

Ah finally. I didn't know they had already done it for open source drivers earlier.

yoshi314 - Some OpenGL drivers only offer up to OpenGL 3.x under compatibility profile, and OpenGL 4+ support is onpo available with core profile (e.g Intel driver)

Nvidia may not be the friendliest open-source contributor around, but they've been supporting Linux gaming quiet well in recent months, they've also fixed some issues related to DXVK.

Yeah, thankfully they are helped out from being the worst offender... By Oracle...

I am sure the Nvidia DXVK-related tweaks are solely motivated by commercial pressures. Ensuring that their proprietary Vulkan driver is on parity with, or better than, AMDs.

NVIDIA drivers are pretty decent with a few regressions now and again, however their nvidia-settings tool leaves allot to be desired since it relies on saving to config files and such and often doesn't apply certain settings correctly. Any newcomers unaware of this issue would certainly get themselves into trouble.

Perhaps, I don't really know. But what I do know is that nVidia never fixed broken multi-monitor support and it's been decades. And they also never fixed their horrible xrender performance and that too has been decades and the first chance they had to dump x11 for wayland they ruined it by refusing to support GBM. Nvidia has proven over and over again that they don't give a tiny little fuck about linux.
