Phoronix: Facebook Looking To Add Zstd Support To The Linux Kernel, Btrfs

Zstd (also known as Zstandard) is a lossless data compression developed by Facebook that has been open-source since last year. This BSD-licensed compression algorithm aims to offer compression similar to zip/gzip but with faster speeds both for compression and decompression. Facebook developers are now looking at adding this support to the Linux kernel...

zstd is a really sweet compression tool. casync switched recently to zstd (from xz) for its chunks.
Its dictionary features allow very efficient compression of small files, like a more flexible version of brotli.

Which author? which user? which “they”, which “you”?
            • Do you mean facebook kernel developers (author, they) does not give a crap about desktop users (you) ?
Well, this btrfs compression can benefit linux desktop users too.
            • Do you mean facebook (author, they) does not give a crap about users (you) of their own web platform?
Well, sure, they take care a lot of their users, but not for the benefit of their users.
            • Do you mean facebook kernel developers (they) does not give a crap to the news writer (author, you, i.e. Michael)?
              Well, sure.

I still really don't know what you tried to say. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Found the linked blog post interesting:

" Zstd, short for Zstandard, is a new lossless compression algorithm, aiming at providing both great compression ratio and speed for your standard compression needs. "Standard" translates into everyday situations which neither look for highest possible ratio (which LZMA and ZPAQ cover) nor extreme speeds (which LZ4 covers)."

Any word on how this might compare to xz?
