Is there a reason for opus to not be used in hi-def video...like blu-ray movies, besides lack of player support? I mean, does opus still beat everything in high bitrates like 320+?

Besides player support, probably industry lobbying. FLAC has been around for longer and lossless blu-rays don't use it either.

I can't imagine industry lobbying making any difference. Hollywood and porn are far more powerful than Apple and MPEG-LA. Disney single-handedly made copyright indefinate (it's extended before anything can become public domain). Besides, government isn't involved in choosing codecs, only in fining and jailing certain competitors. Maybe Sony could kill it, though. Does Sony have a stake in the patented codecs?

What would porn gain in higher quality sound? It's not like there's exquisite orchestral performances requiring such.

I dunno... a Montage to the sound of Wagner's Ride Of The Valkyries would be pretty interesting

A lot actually. I read somewhere on the internet that (at small bitrates or something) better sound quality has a bigger effect on viewer pleasure than better video quality, within bounds of course. So basically, to control bandwidth, keep sound quality at "CD quality" at all times and only adjust the video quality. That keeps viewer pleasure high. At least that's my interpretation. Opus makes that easier.

Perceptual analysis has shown that better sound is better than better video. Tolerance to worse images is higher than tolerance to worse audio.

I can agree to that. Not necessarily in the context of porn, but just videos in general. If I'm watching a youtube video and the video is shit but the audio is crystal clear then i'll just minimze youtube and listen to the video rather than making myself sit through pixelated crap
