Am I missing something here, or is Ian just... off regarding his claims?

And no, not always migrating off of closed source software is an option, and more often than not the admin that has to deal with them has little to say on the matter.
Sure, we all know how to diagnose problems in sysV init scripts, but we've had few decades of practice with them. Now we have to learn a new skill set. I say it is small price to pay.

A. You're too hard headed to listen to anyone else,
B. You're too dumb to understand other's arguments, or
C. You're lying for your own purposes (ie trolling).
So which is it?

Russ's message makes a lot of sense to me. https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote.../msg00053.html
Treat it like translations. If somebody provides support for alt-init systems, the devs have a responsibility to include it in their packages. But if no one steps up and does the work, that can't block things from moving forward.
