The player is just kept up to date and always uses the latest libav. So multi-threaded decoding was in mplayer2 long before XBMC. It does Hi10p decodes whereas XBMC is still experimental (and, for the record, I hate 10-bit encodes). And mplayer2 handles Matroska ordered chapters and I think XBMC will never get this functionality.

Not to mention the myriad of bug and security fixes for ffmpeg that get pushed out so often. In the most recent, official release of XBMC, they hadn't updated ffmpeg anything in a long time IIRC.

I wish there was VAAPI support in mplayer2?

Yep, that's pretty much the only thing missing in mplayer2.

          I don't think it supports DXVA2 either.

Yeah... video playback is one of those areas where Linux just curb-stomps Windows, at least with VDPAU in my experience.

And I also. If so it would really be one player to rule them all. Even without it, I still get better performance with mplayer and the gl2 accelerator than with VLC and vaapi.
