Phoronix: Linux Fixes Regression That Broke File Names With ❤️ & Other Special Characters

Linus Torvalds took to reverting some code tonight within the mainline Linux kernel that inadvertently had broken support having filenames with ❤️ and other special Unicode characters in filenames when on file-systems with case-folding (optional case insensitive file/folder name) support...

Just to make sure I've understood this correctly. If you've enabled casefold when creating an ext4 filesystem, the recent code changes won't actually impact anything unless you've specifically set the casefold inode attribute ('+F') on specific directories right?

Just who could've thought that the kludge to aid the corps to not make games for Linux would lead to bugs?? No-one.

I might be old but I would never in my life use emojis in file names. I've seen commits with emojis and it almost makes me want to throw up.
What's next? Thumbs up/down instead of true/false in configs?

I often work with files that have filenames in different languages, especially Chinese. Will this break those files?

Should only use readily typed characters as filenames.

Only click and play (eg. Windows) users would use other characters for filenames.

if you think about it this is all about developers who create files with one casing and try to read it with another casing. seems really silly to support that in a filesystem.

I am with you, but the Japanese, Chinese, etc have a problem.

That's what Linux desktop users will become when either Microsoft or Valve end up operating the most popular distro.
