I mean, one reason to point out it is MS doing it is to declare victory over their previous business models you have forced them to change and rub it in their faces.

MS is simply following the money. O365 and other software are subscriptions now and most servers are linux now and they rent server time. WSL makes it easier for devs to test before they push it to the cloud without dual booting. It is all about money and that doesn't need to be tied down to one OS.
