On the Kaby Lake S side it turns out all these years that the device ID was missing for dual-core Kaby Lake S processors like the Core i3 7100 while the device ID for higher-tier Kaby Laky processors was present for years.
Hold up. The way I remember it, these i3s had ECC support so Intel could upsell customers who just needed any way to light up a socket, would've used the cheapest Celeron if they could, and would laugh in Intel's face at the idea of $200 Xeons. There was, of course, a truck-sized ECC-less hole in the i5, i7 part of the product stack that potetial-Xeon-afforders could stomach using interactively.

So, the SKU that "had" ECC support as a fig leaf for Intel's ECC market segmentation never really had it working at all. Remarkable.
