Phoronix: Linux 6.11 Kernel Features Deliver A Lot For New/Upcoming Intel & AMD Hardware

Linux 6.11 as often is the case each kernel cycle brings a lot of new improvements for recent/upcoming Intel and AMD platforms. There are big step forwards for AMD confidential computing, initial RDNA4 graphics support, new AMD P-State driver features, and much more on the AMD side. On the Intel side there is ongoing work around Xe2 graphics for Lunar Lake and Battlemage but not yet stable. Intel also has initial Panther Lake audio support, more NPU driver enhancements, and a range of other kernel additions to benefit their platforms.

Also great on 6.11 is that about everything(except the IMG GPU of course) of the Visionfive2 hardware now runs out of the box. That is the cheapest and most accessible(as you can just order it on Amazon) riscv hardware on the market right now. And it now just boots on pure mainline with nearly all HW enabled out of the box.

Hopefully this means a Q4 2024 release for RDNA 4 GPUs.

Any news about the NTSYNC driver implementation? Actually it was planned for 6.10 but was postponed to 6.11 afaik.

According to MLID youtube, the 8800 XT (largest die) will be launched in Q4, but no word on the 8700 XT.

I saw that. The 8800 XT outta have one hell of a price/performance ratio if the rumors around its performance and $499-$599 price are true.

Related to AMD graphics, I just hope we, meaning PC users in general, get some sort of AI based upscaling. Given the option, I almost always would rather play at 1440p Medium or High settings instead of 720-1080p with Ultra settings upscaled to 1440p. I don't care if the upscaler is NIS, FSR, or XESS, they all have their flaws and limitations that become more and more apparent as you upscale beyond 1080p on a larger screen and especially when your sitting at a monitor and not a TV that's across the room.

Yeah, would be cool if it would land for 6.12 lts.

If they are doing an 8800 XT as the largest die, this is enough for me and might get me to upgrade my 5700 XT (paired with my 5950x). A proper high-end GPU good enough for 4K without overkill power consumption (would go well with my Seasonic TX-850) and a sensible price hopefully.

They are only launching midrange GPUs for the RDNA4 lineup, and the name might be 8700 XT (instead of 8800 XT) as the price range is 499-599$ MSRP. The raster is expected to be around RTX 4080 with ray tracing approximately around 4070 (ti). It seems the volume of the two variants (probably 8600/8700 XT) is expected to be high, so the RTX models may see price drops if that is your preference.

All RDNA4 cards are monolithic dies, so the should hopefully be less driver issues compared to the RDNA3 lineup.

What ever happened with fast kernel headers? I remember hearing a small part of it was merged but after that I've heard nothing.
