UEFI capsules are just one way of updating a devices firmware mainly used for BIOS updates, but fwupd supports many many more ways of updating firmware. For example fastboot, or directly writing to SPIs and many many more.

Some mechanisms are still missing because not many vendors support this. Yea, your business laptop from Dell might support fwupd, but ordinary computers targeting home users usually don't support any firmware updates via fwupd. Those who are aware of gaming setups don't buy Dell Alienware shit.

UEFI encapsulation does much of the heavy lifting here, but yeah fwupd does solve a lot of problems especially when coupled with notification. It's a case where things generally "just work". I would love to see all OEMs contributing their firmware blobs to their central repository but that's mostly a pipe dream.

Fwupd is such an amazing application. It seems to solve all the woes of every vendor having a multiples ways to upgrade various firmware and having all this 3rd party background software tell you "you have drivers and firmware you need to update".
