Finally. Hopefully no more sitting watching the screen scroll by at 1 line/sec. Ugh, so painful.

    I miss scrollback too.

I would rather see true unicode support (non-latin text & emoji) than more colors. But I know unicode support (even just the BMP portion) is hard so I don't expect much here.

Why do you need the text console anyways where you can have true colors in your Xorg/Wayland terminal?

This is seemingly not the same patch, as far as I can see they simply revert the patches which removed the scrollback buffer. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I wonder if this is similar to the work that John Carmack did on OpenBSD's framebuffer console?:

This stuff is certainly useful. The sharp DRM consoles look great but really do take it out of the machine trying to render them when things scroll past quickly!

For anyone interested, I just found a patch to restore it: https://marc.info/?l=gentoo-user&m=163250452914253&w=2
Apparently it's even better than before and provides separate scrollback beffer for each vt.
Sadly Gentoo doesn't include it and I haven't been able to find a newer version of the patch which is applicable to kernel 5.18
