Phoronix: Linux 5.20 To Feature Faster Console Scrolling At Boot For Old FBDEV Drivers

This week's DRM-Misc-Next pull request was sent out of new DRM changes ready for queuing ahead of Linux 5.20. There isn't too much to get excited about for this week's code updates going to DRM-Next, but there is "fbcon: Improve scrolling performance" that did get my attention...

And here I was hoping it had something to do with scrollback which was removed earlier in the 5.x cycle.
For anyone interested, I just found a patch to restore it: https://marc.info/?l=gentoo-user&m=163250452914253&w=2
Apparently it's even better than before and provides separate scrollback beffer for each vt.

Sadly Gentoo doesn't include it and I haven't been able to find a newer version of the patch which is applicable to kernel 5.18

Here's the last version of the patch for Linux 5.10 and 5.14: https://marc.info/?l=gentoo-user&m=163363597517098&w=2

There've been no further updates: https://marc.info/?a=103367073500003&r=1&w=2

I wonder if this is similar to the work that John Carmack did on OpenBSD's framebuffer console?:

This stuff is certainly useful. The sharp DRM consoles look great but really do take it out of the machine trying to render them when things scroll past quickly!

What about true color support for the tty?

Manjaro provides their scrollback patches for every kernel version, like linux518.

This is seemingly not the same patch, as far as I can see they simply revert the patches which removed the scrollback buffer. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Why not? Low color terminal is ugly.

Why do you need the text console anyways where you can have true colors in your Xorg/Wayland terminal?
