    AFAIK there is nothing stopping you from building your own kernel with whatever drivers you like with whatever compiler you wish to use. It is what I did for nearly a decade when I had the need for out of tree drivers (without needing dkms or akmod or whatever else was the flavor of the month). I have more recently chosen to select hardware platforms for which all drivers are in-tree, or do without the specific hardware capabilities that those drivers would enable. Everyone has a choice to make. I recommend you choose wisely.
