Phoronix: Linux Developers Discuss A Global Counter For Block/Disk Changes

Microsoft and systemd developers are proposing a global counter for block device changes for the Linux kernel to better track changes and having a unique system-wide number for disk and other block device changes rather than on a per-disk basis...

Oh boy here we go... Microsoft and systemd in the same sentence. I hope you ran some benchmarks on your forum Michael because this is the ultimate stress test for sure...

Then a systemd daemon will be needed to manage the counter, and it will need block device UUID because what good is a counter when you can't go from counter value back to device, and it won't keep in sync when you swap devices unless you issue an obscure maintenance command, and it will try to be smarter than you, and it's config will be stored binary as are it's log files. MS will just ignore the whole thing because the purpose was just to throw a wrench into the kernel by hooking systemd deeper into the kernel internals.

I'll assist with that stress test.

An 11th Gen Intel i9-11980HK paired with an NVIDIA RTX 3090 GPU on Windows 11 makes for the best hardware and software combination around.
          Prove me wrong.

          Richard Stallman kicks ass.

          ZFS is better than BTRFS.

          Emacs is better than Vi.

The GPL is why we can't have nice things.

          Richard Stallman is a pedo.

          Vi is better than Emacs.

The GNOME Plugin infrastructure allows for making a great custom desktop.

Using BSD-like licenses to steal open source code is why we can't have nice things.

CentOS Stream is the best CentOS.

Nano is better than Vi and Emacs.

          Clang is the best compiler.

          GCC is the best compiler.

          Python is the best language.

          Microsoft is an honorable company.

          Rust is better than C.

The Linux kernel should be written in C++.

The GNOME Plugin infrastructure crashed my custom desktop.

Wayland development is taking too long.

Wayland development is going too fast.

          Wayland development is just right.

          Google is very trustworthy.

          AMD Mantle sucks.

          systemd is better than OpenRC.

Vulkan is the best thing ever.

          ROCm is better than CUDA.

          OpenRC is better than systemd.

Sure, but I will post it on a separate thread because it goes way too off-topic.

And it's turn that systemd is actually M$ effort to integrate Linux to itself ? What next, when we get confirmation that systemd is funded by M$ ? Everything what M$ suggest should keep away from Linux distros

Both have contributed to Linux far more than you ever did, so that's that.
