Reiser4 + Reiser5 File-Systems Updated For Linux 5.9 Support

I have had that happen on FAT32, NTFS and ext4 as well. Guess I should be squeamish of all file systems then...

I've never had files disappear on ext4, to my knowledge (knock on wood). FAT32 and NTFS might munch a file or two once in a while when something goes wrong, but usually it's something entirely unimportant (like a fully replaceable OS file or a throw away log file, etc) and usually it's reported that something got lost.

Not with ReiserFS. Vast piles of my files just silently, randomly disappeared on me, unreported and for no apparent reason. There was no indication that something was going wrong, other than eventually I noticed that something that should have been there was no longer anywhere to be found. Luckily, I had backups of most files on separate file systems other than ReiserFS, so all was not lost. But I'm sure there was probably a few files that were too recent to be in my backups, so something was indeed lost, forever. Thanks a lot ReiserFS. Never again.

Ignoring debates about name I have simple question - Does it offer something important that file systems supported by Linux lacks? If no then I don't see any good reason to merge it. Currently the only out of tree FS I care about is NTFS3 from Paragon.

From that point forward, I stayed with ext2 (then 3, and today 4), even if it was way slower than ReiserFS back in the day. No amount of speed is worth having your files murdered.

It really is a shame ReiserFS threads always turn out like this. It would be pretty interesting to see benchmarks of Reiser4 and Reiser5 included in one of the normal XFS vs EXT4 vs Btrfs vs F2FS benchmark articles. The last Phoronix Reiser4 benchmark article was in 2018 and I don't think Reiser5 has been tested yet.

Man the Linux world is full of soy now. I wouldn't care if a file sytem was named after Hitler; Stalin; Pol Pot; etc as long as it is good code.
