    How about, say, something better than IOCTLs? IOCTLs aren't funny since when you need that, you don't even really know whether system supports that beforehand, just call it and hope for best. I'd say it makes sense to know beforehand whether feature exists at all before calling it rather than just calling into unknown without real clue whether it going to work at all.
