Phoronix: Linux 5.3-rc3 Comes In As A Calm Release

Linus Torvalds released Linux 5.3-rc3 on Sunday night and it was to his surprise that it was even smaller than the previous week's release candidate...

With currect firmware from https://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5..._ucode/navi10/ this rc3 fails to initialize my 5700XT with the following error:
    [ 137.452789] [drm:amdgpu_device_init.cold [amdgpu]] *ERROR* hw_init of IP block <vcn_v2_0> failed -110
    [ 137.452795] amdgpu 0000:0b:00.0: amdgpu_device_ip_init failed
[ 137.452798] amdgpu 0000:0b:00.0: Fatal error during GPU init
I had a similar error a few weeks ago. The reason were wrong firmware files.
agd5f Is the above mentioned firmware correct for rc3?

The firmware file that were there previously seem fot work for rc3.

So Navi firmware files will land in upstream firmware repo soon? So far they are missing: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux...git/log/amdgpu

And why are a few bin files missing in general (even using these additional ones above)? Kernel complains about them.

          Yes.

What files are you referring to? The vega20_ta.bin is not upstream yet because it's optional and not used by any currently available boards. There is, however, no way to mark a firmware as optional.

Yep, that's the one and I think one more mentioning raven (I can check a bit later).

              hi,

probably you mean the ' raven_kicker_rlc.bin'. I don't miss it though, because without it my Raven doesn't show any erratic behavior. It would be nice to know what it is supposed to do (trigger something past being loaded ?). I have asked about it in IRC some weeks ago, but nobody could answer my questions.

Just ran update-initramfs -u for a test, here is what I get:

                Code:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/vega20_ta.bin for module amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/raven_kicker_rlc.bin for module amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module amdgpu
I guess all three of those are optional?

raven_kicker is for an unreleased part and it will be upstream soon. navi10_mes is optional.

Sadly with 5.3-rcX out of tree module rtl8821ce from https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce is broken. Maby anyone here is able to see the problem and can help to fix that driver? Module builds fine, but gives errors on module loading.

dmesg from 5.2 and 5.3 are here: https://debianforum.de/forum/pastebi...e=view&s=40811
