Any performance improvements to go with this? I mean, bzip2 is not particularly slow, but you'd think over the timespan, someone must have come up with ideas to speed up some things.

lbzip2 has much better performance if you have more than a single CPU core. if you have enough cores, it's even faster than lz4.

rene build systems are important to developers. A swift move to Meson very wise if you care about quality and developer efficiency.

I'll take the CMake build system instead.
