You only talk about sysV init and it's deficiencies - there were alternatives. Even on BSD I do have alternatives to old robust RC: runit and openRC.

You seem to have completely forget, which project is the more important one. Without kernel, systemd would be meaningless, at least as long as you haven't come up with systemd-kernel of your own.
