Does it make sense to use a forced compression, or heuristic based one?

Determining the compression level heuristically will most likely yield better efficiency. Keep in mind that manually setting the level doesn't imply forcing compression to be always on for all files.

With that said, I want to be able to cycle through levels manually in order to bench my setups.

I mean compression itself. btrfs has a forced and autodetect mode. But the later is not very smart, and doesn't compress files if first few blocks aren't compressing well.

If you know your set is compressible it wouldn't hurt forcing it.
