There are mods on subreddits and any small/mid size site like phoronix, who keep things in check, but when it comes to open source communities (any async communication) it's always better to have set rules everyone can follow. Everyone's comfort level around others varies highly, and saying just be "excellent" might not cut it, hence the need for a few precise ground rules. This is also why It's better to have such rules than to have none, you can always change the rules to fit community needs and set enforcement guidelines.
Grown people can, and do, put up with abuse, which is unavoidable and is just a part of life, like bad weather. And if the "activists" are so desperate for a cause to "fight" for (not that they have the faintest idea what that really means) but can't come up with anything more substantial than trying to drum up a "*gate" out of F*KING VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS, then I would say bless them, but maybe they should actually get a life,.

    .
Well that part is easy. The correct pronoun for a person with XY chromosomes and a penis is "he". A person with XX chromosomes and a vagina is a "she". "They" is only correct when referring to a group of people. Everything else is non-gramamtical, and words like "xe" or "zir" don't exist in the English language.

The problem here is that behind the "correct pronouns" fad is something outright sinister: the attempt to transform and control language in order to transform and control people's thoughts with regard to an enforced but unwanted ideology. Orwell called that Newspeak and he has shown better than anyone how terrifying it can be if we allow it.

      • Linux is bad. We have an ethical responsibility to refuse to work on it. It's bad for Microsoft and its employees since it's competition. They're just trying to feed their families you know? SJW mindset and rules in a nutshell.
This is the exact argument once used by one Darl McBride, by the way.

Ummm no we don't. Or, more precisely, not always and not automatically. Some non-technical contributions, like funding, donations, writing documentation, UI design, providing support to users etc. are indeed very valuable, as much as technical contributions (code, benchmarking, testing etc.)

But then there is the other kind of non-technical "contributions", which I'm afraid is the one that the authors of the CoC may have in mind. It's the one that flourishes in the new BS academic departments created to give vacuous vanity degrees to rich but dumb kids at universities that were once prestigious. Here it would have to do with "contributing" to "fighting" against "heteronormative patriarchy" on the LKML, making sure that presentations at Linux conferences are conducted according to the Progressive Stack and "decolonising " the git repos.

Should that happen, thanks God for the GPL that allows us to fork and kiss them goodbye!

This is the future of the LKML and linux itself.
        Yes, sadly.

Your linked response on the LKML however is good and hits the nail on its head.

Yes, it looks like a split (fork) is unavoidable.

And this has been the goal from the beginning, divide et impera.

Good article. Forget all conspiracy theories. It is plain simple.

              Fake news.
And how lame is it to "back up" the SJW's war against code-of-merit projects with a SJW newspaper?

It would still be playing identity politics, seeing people as groups, not individuals, and reducing them to assumed identities. As such, it would be nothing but SJWism, no different from the idiot children from your typical American college campus. That's what would be wrong with it.

This is what today's "progressives" don't understand, and neither do the alt-right/tea party folk. There are no white rights any more than black rights or women's rights, there are only citizens' rights. Martin Luther King and his supporters wanted specifically to end discrimination against Blacks in the US, yet they called themselves the Civil Rights Movement, not Black Rights Movement or such. That's no accident. They, unlike today's identitarians, were intelligent people. They knew that freedom and justice don't exist unless they're blind. They knew that equality means that skin colour/sex/religion should never be a factor because if they become instead a key to entitlements under Byzantine affirmative action policies, then it's still discrimination.

Indeed. Unfortunately that's exactly what the forces at play wants here. Divide and conquer.

However, divide and conquer tactics only works if the divide is successful. Since this is a minority push the majority should be able to push back and have this repelled. We need everyone to stay with Linux and oppose the change. Just ignore the code of conduct and it will de facto get dropped eventually.

                  • Not sure it was mentioned yet (I'm only on page 14, so far) but is anybody surprised it took less than 24 hours after the announcement for the creator of the CoC to set up a GoFundMe page asking for a cool 10k to develop the Proof-of-Concept for "CoC enforcement/management tools"?

"We love FOSS, but only if we're paid for it! We deeply, truly believe in mon ... free software!"

                    Typical money grab. Wholly foreseeable.
