Debian 7 (released 5 years ago) LTS goes out of support in a week (extended-LTS will continue on freexian for another year, in whole even making 6 years of support for these who like or better to say - for these who funds it). 3.2 kernel that was used there will end even on kernel.org this month, 6 years is really enough.

Debian 8 (current oldstable) LTS starts once regular support ends. That is 17 june and will have both 3.16 and 4.9 kernels supported

Debian 9 (current stable) have 4.9 kernel (backports rolls kernel releases, currently that is 4.16 and will stop upgrading and continue with points on whatever is picked up as Debian 10 kernel probably at 4.19)

Nah, if anyone on Phoronix is to be trusted with PPA's on Debian it's debianxfce, of course! And it definitely won't break your system!!!
