IDE should not be included by default. If they want later to unify some apps and libraries as a sdk, fine by me. But not all users are programmers, not all programmers code in the same language, and not all Java devs use Eclypse to give you an example. That category should be a download by need only.

Only a browser, text editor, video player, photo viewer/gallery, and all codecs legally available. And let people download whatever extra they need.
That would defeat the purpose of Ubuntu being a user-friendly, easy to use OS.

            • Web Browser: Firefox, although I have to use Chromium occasionally to test stuff I'm developing.
            • Email Client: Evolution. When configured with Gnome's online accounts, I can tie into our exchange server w/ AD.
            • Terminal: Gnome Terminal Server (yeah, I'm boring).
            • IDE: Netbeans
            • File manager: Gnome Files
            • Basic Text Editor: Geany. I'd use Gedit if it didn't choke on 1GB+ text files which I have to open at least weekly.
            • IRC/Messaging Client: Hexchat
            • PDF Reader: Document Viewer (evince)
            • Office Suite: LibreOffice, although my company is trying to move us to Office 365
            • Calendar: Evolution
            • Video Player: vlc preferred, I'd love for 3.0 to be finished/included for wayland support, but such is life.
            • Music Player: Pithos (pandora client)
            • Photo Viewer: Shotwell, old Picasa version running on Wine.
            • Screen recording: Don't use one, but support for screen recording/casting in Slack/GoToMeeting will eventually be a requirement at work.

I think the time has come for Unity 8 on Mir by default.
