Would it be fair to say that when this switches over, then Lubuntu will be the go-to distro for those wanting the quintessential LXQt experience? Or is there a distro that showcases it better?

Will this be Wayland ready then?
Wondering how compares to xfce... I like whisker but otherwise use nothing really.

This is just switching for the sake of switching. There are so many features missing yet, just only PCManFM is very far from being ready for production.

@flubba86: Lubuntu is heavily customized. For the raw experience, install Arch and Arch packages, which are supposed to be completely untouched. There's not even a branding changed.

Lubuntu is a tweaked setup. Lxqt by itself isn't very useful. But fortunately everything it misses already exists.

Lubuntu is too customized, Arch installation is for advanced users.

look at the right panel, you have a list of distros that offer it officially.

OpenSUSE and Fedora should fit the bill. Also Manjaro (Arch-based but user-friendly).

Currently on OpenSUSE Leap (the stable yearly release) there is LXQt 0.9. Getting the latest can be done through here https://en.opensuse.org/LXQT

Usually OpenSUSE offers choice between OpenSUSE branding or upstream branding, for LXQt you get only upstream branding.

I personally recommend OpenSUSE, on Leap 42.1, its stable (yearly) release there is LXQt 0.9, if you want newer, you can get the latest from their testing repo (that packages the latest lxqt) this https://en.opensuse.org/LXQT
