    Ubuntu 8.04 seems to turn out as one of the most important Ubuntu releases yet.

    Firefox 3
    Xorg 7.2 -> Xorg 7.4
    New fglrx driver, new RadeonHD driver
    New look
    Kernel 2.6.24 with a lot of wireless improvements and CFS
    KDE 4.0 for Kubuntu (maybe as an inofficial iso, but hey)

    However, Debian/sid is, and Debian/lenny will still be better

    There is so much progress with fglrx at the moment (at least if you compare it to the pre AMD time) and Gutsy shipped with 8.37.6 which was released in May, 4 month before Gutsy itself. It would be a pity to have a LTS Ubuntu without a proprietary AMD driver being able to handle AIGLX well and for that, some more bugfix releases are to follow.
    I commented a bit about it in http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...item&px=NjIyNg but an AIGLX enabled fglrx will be available in Hardy. I would suspect that the final release will use 8.44 or 8.45, once all of the workstation ASICs are enabled and other bugs worked out.

    Phoronix: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Alpha: A First Look

    The first alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04 was scheduled to be released today, but the official release has been pushed back until tomorrow. However, a preliminary CD image of this first alpha release for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has surfaced today on the Internet. While there is still seven more Ubuntu 8.04 test releases planned before the final release of Hardy Heron in April, we have already started exploring this first Hardy Heron LiveCD.
