Phoronix: Ubuntu Infrastructure Woe Continues Making It A Hassle To Run The Latest Upstream Kernel

The Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA for years has been a great feature for Ubuntu users to be able to easily fetch and run the newest upstream kernel whether it's the latest stable kernel version, one of the weekly release candidates, or even the very leading-edge daily Git kernel builds. Sadly for months now this service has been out of order...

I consider the need for a PPA to get the latest kernel one of Ubuntu's biggest failures. I understand Ubuntu wants to be safe by default, but you can have different kernel packages in the same repo while still defaulting to the safe one.

It's completely understandable, they cannot have funding for everything, and considering the resources needed to keep snap on life support not much is left over.

I compile mainline stable kernels for Ubuntu based distros, feel free to give them a try:

The main feature of a distro IMO is to keep up to date. Fedora stays plenty up to date whilst still being easy. Having to use a PPA for basic functionality is not a good look.

Another source of mainline builds: https://github.com/zabbly/linux

PPAs are generally terrible. I always prefer to just use plain Debian APT repositories which can be hosted by anywhere.

              True!
People who understood that have already moved to Debian and other distros!

Could they have a script or package that lets one fetch the kernel and build from source? Not ideal, it takes some time unless one had a Threadripper. As a Linux user since 1993 I can just download and build it if I need to, but for some they wouldn't mind waiting for the packages to build locally, they just wouldn't want the complications of going through a whole install guide.

Many distros that substantially contribute to the upstream ecosystem with developers end up prioritizing stability (and maintenance of existing packages), as that is where their actual paying customers want them to be. If you are a paying/contributing customer, you may get to influence what a distro chooses to prioritize, but that needs to be evaluated against what others (who are also paying) also want.

I normally compile my own kernel on Arch, but use Fedora everywhere and really appreciate the quality of the mainline copr: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/co...illa/mainline/ where they make it really convenient to only enter after the initial 2 week merge window. Fedora has a lot of virtue.
